Civil Liberties Solidarity Resolution passed

At our membership meeting on Feb. 18, we passed the following resolution in support of recent movements for civil liberties:

WHEREAS, there have been a number of disturbing cases in the news in the past year alleging excessive use of force by police, most frequently against persons of color,

WHEREAS peaceful protestors speaking out about these events and other social justice causes are often met with large numbers of militarized law enforcement officers and unreasonable restrictions,

WHEREAS,as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “In the end, we will remember not so much the words of our enemies as the silence of our friends.”

 NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED AFSCME Local 3937, the University of Minnesota Technical Workers Union, opposes attacks on traditional constitutional guarantees and urges the continued support of civil rights and civil liberties; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that AFSCME Local 3937 calls on elected officials at every level of government to make certain that the circumstances surrounding police shootings of unarmed citizens are fully and fairly investigated in a swift and transparent way, and that charges be brought and vigorously pursued when applicable; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that AFSCME Local 3937 expresses our outrage at the militarized and heavy handed response by law enforcement to recent protests that call for police accountability, particularly in communities of color;
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that AFSCME Local 3937 will encourage AFSCME Council 5, AFSCME International, our regional labor federations and the MN AFL-CIO to pass similar resolutions.
