What is Workplace Bullying

Workplace Bullying is not like the Scott Farkus characters we've seen in movies like "A Christmas Story" or Regina George in "Mean Girls".  Workplace Bullying is a serious, health-harming epidemic in the country and at our workplace. The CIty Pages recently wrote an article about workplace bullying as well. And yes, workplace bullying occurs at the University of Minnesota.

What is workplace bullying?

Workplace bullying is not like the Scott Farkus characters we’ve seen in movies like “A Christmas Story” or Regina George in “Mean Girls”. Workplace bullying is a serious , health-harming epidemic in the country and at our workplace. The City Pages recently wrote an article (link to it) about workplace bullying as well. And, yes, workplace bullying occurs at the University of Minnesota also.

This is the definition of workplace bullying that Local 3937 uses:

  • Repeated, deliberate, health-harming mistreatment by one or more people of an employee byby:
  • verbal abuse, or
  • threats, intimidation, humiliation, or
  • work interference, sabotage, or
  • exploitation of a known vulnerability, or
  • a combination of any.

Bullying is repeated actions and practices that are directed at one or more employees, that are considered unwanted/unwelcome behavior, which may be done deliberately (or unconsciously) to cause humiliation, offense and distress, and that may interfere with job performance and/or cause an unpleasant working environment.

A bully doesn't need to twist your arm and can, in fact, do worse than arm-twisting because there are serious health implications for the targets of workplace bullies e.g. Depression, anxiety, hypertension and heart disease, etc
